In OOo 2.4 I managed to disable automatic number to date conversion. I

I do _not_ want to create a default template. I want to configure Calc
so that I can open a document, enter "8.5" into a cell, and not have
it turned into a date or anything else. I repeat that for this use
case a new default template is _not_ the answer, and neither is
defining each cell as text.
Thanks.
please have a look at the OpenOffice.org Tips 'n' Tricks blog. There
are some tips titled "Fighting Automatic Replacements in Calc".

I'm using OOo 3.0 on Vista and get the same result. The solution (for
me) is to use , (comma) instead of . (dot) as it is standard in swedish.
You can change this under language in under Tool - Alternative by
ticking / unticking decimalpoint.
