Anybody know where can I find OO.o 3.01 without JRE?
Alternatively if the version of JRE with OO.o 3.0.1 is the same as or
more recent than [Current]<SNIP>
I'll fetch the version on the web site. How do I determine this?
Yes, it's here. Just uncheck the JRE version.
http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US
I just checked the version of JRE on my laptop and it is the latest
version.
I download the 3.0.1 update (did not look for the no-JRE file) of OOo
and I still had the latest JRE.
I do not think that when you run an install of a program that has a
"Stale"
version of Java, you would "uninstall" the newer version that is on your
computer.
As I said, I have the latest version of Java's JRE. I do not worry
about if
OOo has the latest. I just keep my system to check for any updates,
including
Java. That is the only way I know to make sure I have the most up to date
system.
Maybe not, but all versions of Java JRE remain on your system until you
remove them, and the version downloaded with OO.o will be attached to
the OO.o installation, so will be as insecure as the old version of Java.
I have a program from Secunia Security, called PCI (I forget what that
stands for) that checks the files in my computer for signatures it
downloads from its home office and tells me when I have a version it
knows to be vulnerable. It wakes up on Patch Tuesday, and other times
when the parent company finds security updates on the software it tracks.
Old versions of JRE are vulnerable, and the problem continues until you
remove the old version, or so say the safety experts. So if you download
a stale version, you can't just fetch the most recent and install it.
You have to remove the stale version (which damages the recent version)
so you have to fetch the most recent JRE and install that. When that
works, it is fine.
When is doesn't you can fetch a program I just found named JavaRa from
http://raproducts.org/ which is a tool that removes old and redundant
versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). Simply select "Check for
Updates" or "Remove Older Version" to begin. JavaRa is free under the
GNU GPL version two.
You may have software that depends on the old version, so you could kill
that software. Annoying.

retired and tired of MS and other companies as well
Only MS would lay off people to save money when they only
get 4.17 billion in profit from 16 billion in sales. Sales being up
and profit being down. Still 4.17 billion in profit and they need to
save
money by laying off 5,000 people.
Will they ask the government for a handout? They already got one
called exclusive contracts with the Feds.
