I do not know why you have to enter a password or join Openoffice. Openoffice is free from www.openoffice.org and you don't need to join anything or enter any passwords. If you have paid money for something from a different web site that claims to be Openoffice then I suggest you try to get your money back.
Openoffice can open Word documents so you shouldn't have any problems once you have installed the correct version of the software.
