Thanks for the suggestion but that was the first obvious thing I did.
The cells with the numbers are definitely aligned left and top, but
when I type a number in the cell it stays vertically centered.

And I should also add that this is a table in Writer, not a cell in
Calc - because I forgot to make that clear in my first post.
