Ctrl+D does something very similar (but perhaps more general) in Calc -
but only with strings, it seems, not with numbers (or other items). It
brings up a list of (up to 200) entries appearing in the same column. You
can select the required entry using the arrow keys or jump close to it by
typing its initial letter. Pressing Enter completes the process.

I also had a reply from Tom who showed me how to change the list of items to
just fill down the entry from above, which is just what I wanted.
