I recently installed OOo 3.1 and am in need of basic
instructions. I am a beginner level user, so I need very basic
instructions. Right now I want to know how to set decimal tabs in a
text document so that they stay throughout the entire document. I
tried setting them using Paragraph but they do not stay. What is
your definition of "Paragraph?"
For what it's worth, *my* definition of a paragraph is everything
between consecutive paragraph marks (press Ctrl+F10 to see them) -
generally between consecutive occurrences of Enter being pressed.
As you will have discovered, if you set tabs manually on the
horizontal ruler with no text selected, the tabs apply to the current
paragraph only. There are a number of ways that you can extend this
to other paragraphs:
o Select all the relevant material before setting the tabs.
o Set the tabs in the first paragraph that needs them. Put the
cursor at the end of that paragraph, press Enter, and enter
subsequent material. Later paragraphs will inherit the tab settings
of your first paragraph.
o If you have already entered the later material, put the cursor at
the very beginning of the second paragraph and press Backspace. This
will (temporarily) merge the two paragraphs and give both paragraphs
your required arrangement of tab settings. Then simply press Enter
to separate the paragraphs again. Repeat as necessary.
o Put the cursor somewhere in your first paragraph. Double-click
the Format Paintbrush (in the Standard toolbar) - and notice that the
cursor has changed into a paint can. Now click once in each
paragraph that requires the tab settings. When you have finished,
press Esc to cancel the paint can.
o The best way is to set your tabs in a paragraph style instead of
in individual paragraphs. If you are using only one paragraph style
- perhaps "Default" - you can do this very easily for the whole
document. Right click somewhere and go to Edit Paragraph Style... |
Tabs. Enter your tab settings there and they will apply to all
paragraphs with the same style.
Note that if you have already set tabs in individual paragraphs,
these will sometimes take precedence over those set in the paragraph
style, so you may want to remove any existing tab settings first.
I trust this helps.
