So, for clarity, having selected a row, move the cursor to a new row using
the down [or up] arrow *and then* hit shift/space to highlight the new row.
So this is two separate key strokes instead of Excel's one
I was referring back to the OP's original statement.

The row selection works like a charm, however the answer to the original
question remains "You can't do it."
Just for the record, she couldn't do it in Excel under windows either.
Movement to another row cancels the selection. I know of no keyboard
method to move the selection, only extend it. I believe this is what
the OP's friend was doing. In Excel, after you highlight a row,
SHIFT+DOWN ARROW extends the selection, effectively indicating the
desired record selection (the last highlighted row). In OO.o this
action collapses the selection to the first cell in the row and extends
the CELL selection down.
Using F8, additional selection mode, works the same as SHIFT+ARROW. The
row selection collapses to a single cell.
I have found no way to duplicate the desired behavior in OO.o.
Hopefull someone will come up with a solution for Dotan's friend.
