There is another problem with the position taken by Drew.
Some people have multiple e-mail addresses and forget which one they used to subscribe to a particular list. Subscription only lists result in frustrated users who trying to send from the wrong address only to have their possibly involved question rejected since they are deemed to not be a subscribed member of the list.
I most certainly don't know the best way to see that the response gets back to such non-members but the attitude that Drew expresses is reminiscent of the famous phrase, "Let them eat cake."
