OK, now it's clear that Ian's comcast account is not subscribed and that
the list manager ignores the From when it receives posts from Gmane, or
perhaps has a secondary indirect subscriber list it checks when a post
comes in from a newsgroup manager like Gmane. So if Ian posts through
Gmane, he is "subscribed" as far as the list is concerned (that is, the
post is not delivered to the moderator, and doesn't contain the header
field that shows it as being from an unsubscribed user). That was the
source of my "assertion" -- no delivered-to header was equated to
subscribed user, since that's the only way we can really tell. Direct
posts from that account are unsubscribed.
