Thank you, Drew. It worked. Thanks also to Ashish and JOE.
To summarize:
1) You must have Column Headers displayed.
2) You must select all the column _headers_ of the source columns.
3) You must right click on the first source column _header_.
4) You must select Copy from the drop down menu to copy the information.
4) You must select all the column _headers_ of the destination columns.
5) You must right click on the first destination column _headers_.
6) You must select Paste Special from the drop down menu.
7) You must clear all but format from the list of selected items to paste
the column formatting.
Did I get it right?

When you pasted special with only formats checked, did you have focus on
only a single cell that you wanted to be the top left of the
copied area? Or, did you select columns to paste?
I tried a single cell. I also tried one cell in each target column as
I understood Ashish to have suggested. The result was the same both ways.
I just tried it using Ubuntu.
When I copied entire columns it worked.
If you copy a block of cells it doesn't work.
You said in your earlier email:
I selected all the columns that I wanted to replicate in an empty row
(no merged cells) and used Ctrl+C to copy them.
That won't work - you must select the colmns.
