You can use the icons to open the various OpenOffice components. The one you want to use for word processing is called "Writer". Also, by default, Writer saves in the OpenDocument Text (ODT) format. If you're creating a document for use in Word, you can save it in .DOC format, by selecting the appropriate file type in Save as. Also, ensure automatic file name extention is selected.
