Please keep in mind that some (many?) of these requests may have come
from "users" that purchases OOo from unscrupulous scammers that sell OOo
links & then promise to provide full support. What they do is charge the
person for a link to OOo mirrors (some of which may be government funded
universities - making this illegal in some cases), and then
automatically sign the person up to this list for support.

Any person that has fallen for this scam most likely has never heard of,
or experienced, an email list. Next thing they know, they are flooded
with OOo list messages. They then try to unsubscribe - sometimes they
are successful, sometimes not. All you need to do it check the archives
for examples.

Another issue is the OOo support page itself:
http://support.openoffice.org/index.html

<quote>
Users Mail List (Subscribe / Archives)
OpenOffice.org Project community support provided by a network of
hundreds of experienced users. You must be subscribed to post messages.
</quote>

While most longtime OOo list users applaud the 'Subscribe' link, I think
it also is part of the problem. Again, someone that has no experience
with email lists, clicks on the link
(mailto:[email protected]) and gets subscribed. Rather than
doing that, the link (IMO) should instead go directly to:
http://www.openoffice.org/mail_list.html
where the prospective list member can read information about the list
first.
  That, or a similar page explaining list basics, and explaining that
they are about to: 1) be subscribed to possible high volume email list,
and 2) clear instructions on how to unsubscribe if they find that they
don't wish to continue. This page could also serve as the
subscribe/unsubscribe form in the same manner used by other lists. See
the following for an example:
