OK, I've got another draft here (mine on the left, John's on the

essential points are covered. Comments?
It's great, except that you might want to consider these alternatives:
[A] Responding to the digest message itself will not work. Instead,
open the relevant attachment with your mail client, and ensure that
your reply goes to [email protected] and not directly to the
author of the message. Reply All will automatically insert both
addresses.
- OR -
[B] To reply to any message, hit Reply-All to *make your reply go to
the list*. Also, as a courtesy, please delete the address in the
"To:" header of your reply.
(1) I think we need to emphasize Reply All; otherwise the reply will
not go to the list but to an individual. [You do say "ensure that your
reply goes to [email protected]", but if we are worried about
clueless correspondents...]
(2) After Reply All (which includes CC:list), it would be courteous
to remove the To: address.
[B] still leaves out the warning not to reply to the digest message,
which is the most natural action and will not work. I think that's
essential. So:
[A'] Responding to the digest message itself will not work. Instead,
open the relevant attachment with your mail client, and Reply All. This
will automatically insert addresses for both the author and the list;
please remove the author, communications should go to the list only.
<The more I consider the contortions into which we bend ourselves to
try to make this idiot-proof and considerate to all, the more I wonder
about the merits of unsubscribed posting.>

That battle has been fought and refought, and there are *many* people on
both sides there (e.g., you and I disagree). Further discussion of that
here is useless.
