I certainly hope it can be automated, but until then, we can still respond as individuals. As you know, IMHO forcing the subscription would cause more problems than it would solve. There have been *many* attempts to resolve that debate, with no conclusion reached.
I'm attaching a draft of a response for comments. I'll try to collect all the admin stuff I think is involved into an article and post that also. That article probably should also be linked from the website's page about mailing lists.
