Just out of curiosity, what font are you using? Does the font have a "bold
but not italic" flavour?

Is the text in one of your hand-made styles? Does the style have any strange
characteristics?

Does the "italicness" (italicity?) go away when you "un-bold" the text? What
happens if you select the text and hit the Italic button? Twice?

What happens if you select the text, hit Ctrl-M to remove all formatting and
then try to "bold" it?
