*Hi Harold
Thanks for your prompt response
Here are the answers to your questions*

Just out of curiosity, what font are you using? Does the font have a "bold
but not italic" flavour?
*The font does not matter - it is happening with all fonts: Times, Arial
, all the ones I have tried*
Is the text in one of your hand-made styles? Does the style have any strange
characteristics?
*No, no hand made styles in use and the fonts are common garden Arial,
Times, etc*
Does the "italicness" (italicity?) go away when you "un-bold" the text? What
happens if you select the text and hit the Italic button? Twice?
*Un-bolding the text gets rid of the bold _/and/_ the italics. When the
text is bolded, nothing happens if I select the text and hit the Italic
button twice, or any number of times. When Bold is selected the Italic
button is highlighted, or not, depending on whether or not I have hit
it, but it has no effect on the text. However, if the text is not
bolded then the Italic button works as it is meant to work, either
applying or removing the Italic style.*
What happens if you select the text, hit Ctrl-M to remove all formatting and
then try to "bold" it?
*If I do that I end up with /Bold + Italics/ ... i.e. Ctrl+M does not
fix the problem*
*A thought! - prompted by your questions about fonts ...
My son-in-law and I are in the sign making business and recently, I
installed many fonts from a commercial (paid for; not pirate)
sign-writing CD to give me a total of about 1100 fonts. I am not
absolutely sure, but it is possible that the problem started then. Does
this suggest anything to you?*
*Many thanks and kind regards, James*
