*A thought! - prompted by your questions about fonts ...
My son-in-law and I are in the sign making business and recently, I
installed many fonts from a commercial (paid for; not pirate)
sign-writing CD to give me a total of about 1100 fonts. I am not
absolutely sure, but it is possible that the problem started then.
Does this suggest anything to you?*

If I remember correctly, XP has a limit to the number of fonts it can
"use". Something like 500 or so. It develops problems with fonts after
that.

I don't think there is a limitation in XP (could be wrong as I use linux
& only boot to windows for testing):

I've had it happen to me, a long long time ago. You may need to
get a font manager that will keep track of installed fonts as well as
fonts on external media (something like Corel's, that came with
WordPerfect 2000, which is what I use -- the font manager but not, alas,
WordPerfect,) allowing you to install, uninstall and swap fonts as needed.

This might be of use:

Another font problem for XP is deleting a system font. That can lead to
problems as well (I don't think this is your problem though, this
ususally shows up in your various window panes.)

Google
<http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=windows+xp+font+problems&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&gs_rfai=>
came up with something that might be your problem: When you installed
new fonts, some of the standard fonts may have been replace by a link to
a new font. If that link is not pointing to a font file (i.e. the link
is broken,) XP will automatically set the font to italics (see:
<http://www.tweakxp.com/article37501.aspx>.)

I hope I've been of some help to you.

I'm wondering if perhaps OOo may have been the one that was
overloaded... If OOo doesn't recognize a font, it will revert to a
"fallback":
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Font-FAQ

I've not read all of the posts regarding this; James did any of your
other applications exhibit a similar problem with all the fonts
installed, or was this issue only with OOo?
