Sorry Andy and Johnny I disappeared but will be onto this again later today.
I will try anything you said since my last reply. Yes the paragraphs use
numbering.

The last thing I tried was to copy one of the paras from my original
document into my test document and here are the test results:

First I just wanted to make sure that my test worked as I expected:

1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. Change say *Spacing* > Below para
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style

Repeated this as follows:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. This time I changed the *Indent to various values*
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style.

Now I copied one of the numbered paras from my original document into the
test document and redid each of the above 2 tests:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. Change say *Spacing* > Below para
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style

Repeated this as follows:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. This time I changed the *Indent to various values*
5. Click OK and the change are not seen or made to the new para.
