Yes..

Hmmmm intersting well here's some sort of break through.....

I just started a new document with 2 paras and these steps work

  1. Select one of my paras
  2. Cntrl+M
  3. F11 (Styles and Formatting menu pops up)
  4. Right click on "Default"
  5. I Select "Modify" and para style window pops up
  6. I set the indents that I want (now Im trying Before text 2.00cm)
  7. Click OK (no changes seen on doc)
  8. Selecdt "Update Style" (still no changes seen on doc)
  9. Close (Styles and Formatting menu, still no changes seen on doc)

so then the question is why doesn't it work on my original document with
50
paras ?

Do your paragraphs use any kind of Numbering or some kind of list with
dots?

Sorry Andy and Johnny I disappeared but will be onto this again later today.
I will try anything you said since my last reply. Yes the paragraphs use
numbering.

Well, some numbering settings overrides the style settings, such as indents. I just did some experiments: 1. Right click the page, select the Numbering thing (not sure exactly how it's translated; I use the Swedish version, as I probably mentioned earlier).
2. Do some settings in the Numbering stuff dialogue.
3. Write some silly text (or copy from somewhere) until you have a couple of numbers, like 1 to 3 in my case. 4. Place the cursor somewhere in the number 2 paragraph, or whatever I should call it. 5. Change the indent of the current style (in my case ”Standard”, seems to be ”Default” in the English version), you know, the F11 thing. 6. Nothing will happen, since there is an indent setting in the Numbering dialogue as well, and it overrides the style's setting.
7. Now change space between paragraphs in the current style.
8. Space between each number are now changed.

Does this make sense or even help?

Now I will read the rest of your message…

The last thing I tried was to copy one of the paras from my original
document into my test document and here are the test results:

None of them were numbered, I suppose?

First I just wanted to make sure that my test worked as I expected:

1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. Change say *Spacing* > Below para
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style

Yes, that makes sense.

Repeated this as follows:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. This time I changed the *Indent to various values*
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style.

Makes sense if none of the paragraphs were numbered.

Now I copied one of the numbered paras from my original document into the
test document and redid each of the above 2 tests:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. Change say *Spacing* > Below para
5. Click OK and the change made is immediately auto applied to all paras
throughout the test document that had been formatted with the "*Default*"
style

Yes, that makes sense too.

Repeated this as follows:

 1. F11
2. Right click *Default*
3. Modify
4. This time I changed the *Indent to various values*
5. Click OK and the change are not seen or made to the new para.

Because the Number thing overrides the style settings.
Makes sense to me.

Now try to fiddle a bit with the Number settings in the Position tab.

And I just found that there are special styles for numbering. Click the icon to the right (fifth one from the left) and you'll see some pre defined numbering styles. Create your favourite one there and apply it to your numbering paragraphs and I think you will find the solution to your problems. I have not tried the numbering styles myself, but give it a try at least.
