I've been using SuSE 9.3 for about a week: I upgraded to OpenOffice
2.0-pre with Yast Online update. If you don't have SuseWatcher set up,
try that. (I looked and don't have any .sdw files on my system or I'd
see if OOo 2.0 opens them.) The online update via SuseWatcher is one of
the most attractive features of SuSE 9.x.

The OOo build in SuSE 9.3 is based on the early OOo beta candidate
1.9.79 and is (heavily?) modified by SuSE which they then number
1.9.79.2. That's info in the Splash Screen. I suggest you download and
install the current developer snapshot from OOo or wait until Version 2
goes Gold. (Don't ask. My crystal ball is in the shop for repair.)
FWIW, using a recent developer snapshot is no different - except the
performance will be more stable - than using the OOo distro that came
with SuSE 9.3.

Doug,
My OpenOffice splash screen identifies it as OpenOffice.Org 2.0 and the
"Novell Edition." Does this mean that Novell/SuSE is fudging on the
actual version they're distributing? Or have they produced their own v.
2.0?
Thank you,
Gene
My tongue was in my cheek with the "heavily" modified statement, to be
sure. Also, my only exposure to 9.3 is the live demo download. I run
9.1 here which I periodically update with a current beta plus 1.1.4 has
replaced the 1.1.1 that comes with the SuSE 9.1 distro.
As I understand, Novell/SuSE are completely within the license to
add/remove features or make other changes as long as they retain the OOo
copyright and license notices. As for what was changed for their
1.9.79.2, I haven't a clue, but I suspect it was mostly a polishing for
kernel/interface compatibility. Because OOo is achieving/has achieved
brand status in the user community, it also makes sense to advertise the
brand name instead of calling it something different which I believe
they could do legally and morally if they wished.
Novell's problem is development lead time. When the 1.9.79 beta was
released by OOo, everyone thought the product was a lot closer to final
version than turned out to be the case. However, SuSE 9.3 had its own
release schedule so they went with the best that was available. No
fault, no foul. They are to be commended for their support of OOo
rather than bashed because they use the same crystal ball manufacturer
as the rest of us.
Perhaps all of the above is moot, as I saw another reply in this thread
which points to the release notes wherein it is stated that Star Office
compatibility was broken. Perhaps it is fixed now. It isn't an issue
for me as I have no requirement to interact with SO so I haven't been
following the matter.
My earlier statement still stands, though. It is no more hazardous to
install and use a current beta (1.9.113 at the moment) than the version
distributed with SuSE9.3. Actually, I consider it far less a potential
for problems.
