These are SuSE and Novell release notes, right? The OOo release notes
for both 1.1.4 and 1.9mxxx do _NOT_ say this and I find I can open these
files just fine.

You're right. I didn't pick up on the link address. As I said, I have
no requirement for SO compatibility so I don't pay real close attention
to it.
