If the password was set and the file is in OOo format (ie, .sxw or
.odt) then you might as well forget it. Protection in OOo is much
stronger and breaking it will take considerable time (brute force).

If the document is in .doc format, there is a possibility that you may
be able to recover the password. Search the web for password crackers
for word and see what happens.
