The ISO 3166 code for United Kingdom is "GB", so what you see as "English (UK)" in the user interface is indeed stored as "en-GB" (or "en_GB" or Language="en", Country="GB") internally whereever textual representation is used.

I tried with UK and GB : the entry that WORKS ! is
THES en GB th_en_US_v2

It's somewhat surprising that the access of the non-American English speaking OOo community to its thesaurus is not better conceived. The double access should be part of the standard download, or of dicOoo

I subscribed to this list as I thought this would be a question to be treated here.
