Start OpenOffice.org - writer, calc, impress, it actually doesn't matter - then go to the File menu, go to Open, click on the PowerPoint file you want to open, and it will open. (You might need to click on the option that gives the file formats, and indicate you want to open a PowerPoint file.) OpenOffice.org in my experience opens more MS Office files over a longer time span than does MS Office.
