The question I have is whether all the "core" files are necessary or if the major part can be deleted to save hard disk space. I would like to have both Writer and Calc on my hard disk so I can read xls files occasionally and experiment with Writer---but not at the cost of so much space used for the core since I have only a 2GB hard disk. > > I am fairly sure there are installation programs that use a TEMP > > folder and remove unnecessary files and folders when an installation > > is complete. I installed OO 2.0 from a disk enclosed with the British computer magazine "PC Pro," not from a download (I have a dialup connection!). I therefore have a CD for (re)installing components if necessary or when I want to add anything or do a repair (though I suspect a full reinstall would be required instead, thus losing all my customizations (e.g., the Writer formatting toolbar). Other programs that install from a disk put installation folders (e.g., various jar (?) and zip files) in a temporary folder and when the install is finished, they delete the folder or at least allow the user to delete the folder. Assuming OO is reasonably stable, I do not think it's necessary to keep all the extra resource files on the hard disk, particularly if a user only wants one or two components like Writer and Calc. My MS Office (just Word) folder is only 22MB, though I suppose various resource files that increase the true total are in other folders, e.g., Common files (75 MB on my hard disk). However, even assuming the common files are all for Word, 75+22 is only 97MB instead of the 172MB consumed by the OO folder. It is interesting that the OO community apparently accepts this excessive copnsumption of space as natural. The only discussion of "bloat" I found on the web dealt with the OO's loading speed and not with the size of the OO folder... Thanks for your interest and any suggestions you might have. CPHennessy suggested a trial and error removal of various files, but I do not have the time to contribute this effort.
