On Windows, it has been possible all the time. Provided that we
"connect", we both mean "connect" :). That is, you cannot File/Open an
.mdb file. But you can create a database document (.odb) via
File/New/Database, and let it retrieve its data from (and write to) the
.mdb.

On older versions of Windows, you need the Microsoft Data Access
Components [1] from MS, which are available for free. On Windows XP,
they're included, so this works out-of-the-box.


On OS other than Windows, you cannot connect to .mdb files. There's a
preliminary Linux version of OOo, built from a child workspace. But this
is not in production quality by far, and really cannot be recommended
except for strict testing purpose.
