For countries where English is state language it maybe is corner case,
but for everybody with non-Latin alphabets (Eastern Europe and Asia,
where OO is even more popular then in more wealthy countries) it is huge
issue. 
Even if you write document in non-default language you have to tell this
to OO or forget about spellcheck.

It turns out that you need file-format change for that. See discussion
in issue 35579. OO have missed the boat when going to ODF, when it could
be done with a lot less pain.
 
Anyway, my point is that while OO is nice product with great prospects,
we need to realize that it needs improvements. Simply stating that
"after moving to OO users will never look at MS again" sets wrong
expectations and paves the road to disapointment.
