Hi again

Excellent news. Then there must be something about my network that OO
doesn't like. We started with just a few machines on a peer to peer
Windows network, and have added machines as the business has grown.
Currently, we have two workgroups, "office" and "schoffice" to separate
our accounting computers from the desktops the rest of us use. There
are 4 computers plus the server on the "schoffice" accounting workgroup.
There are 5 Windows Xp Pro desktops, an occasional Windows laptop, and 3
Linux desktops on "office". Each computer can see the shared folders on
the server, and can copy, read, and write files there with no problem
(except for OO). The Windows 2003 server is backed up nightly, so it is
convenient for the desktop users to store their files there. I have
mapped the shared folder on the server to the "S:" drive on my desktop.
I can work in any program other than OO and save documents to "S:"

This all sounds very similar to our setup at work. We have one workgroup "MWM", plus the occassional laptop in the "MSHOME" workgroup. And our shared folder on the server is set up to Z:. So far we are in the same situation, and I don't think those small differences would make a difference to how documents are saved.

If I start a new document and try to save to the shared folder on the
server (naming it "Test"), I get "Error saving the document Untitled1: \
\<path to file>\Test.odt does not exist." When I click ok in the
dialog, I get "Error saving the document Untitled1: General Error
General input/output error." If I try "save as", I get the same errors.

There it is. That "Untitled1:\" bit is what's causing the trouble. So the way the network folder is mapped is what's causing the problem. Whether the problem is Windows' or OpenOffice's I don't know. But I'm not encountering the same problem. I'll have a look at the way our network drive is set up when I get to work.

When saving a document, are you able to navigate to that folder by cliking on "Network Neighborhood" in the left panel? If so, does the document save OK that way?

If I save the file to my local drive and then copy it to the server,
nothing happens when I double click on the file or if I right click on
the file as try to "open with OpenOffice." If I right click on the OO
quickstarter icon in the system tray, click "open document", and then
navigate to the file, it will open, but I cannot save any changes to the
file or save as another file.

So Windows is able to access the mapped drive OK.

Other people seem to be having the same problem as you are, and there is already an issue filed that you might want to vote on. I'm not sure why I'm not encountering that problem.

I'll have a look at work, and let you know if I come across anything that may help. In the meantime, I'd appreciate it if you could let me know whether you can save the document through Network Neighborhood.

Adrian
