While OpenOffice used the Open Document format, it can save in MS
formats, such as .doc for text, .xls for spreadsheet and .ppt for
presentations.  You can manually select these formats, when you use
"Save as".  If you wish to work only with MS formats, you can change the
settings to use them by default.  To do this, click on Tools > Options >
Load/Save > General.  You'll find a "Default file format" box, where you
can set the default file types.
