Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't try installing from the CD
because the error message indicated that the updated version was
already on the hard disk. But it may be that's what is required.

I'm not an expert, but did you download X11 from the net or install
it from your system DVD?
I had same problem (on PowerPC) until I installed from the DVD
