Thanks for the suggestions. I'll give it a try. I was just a little thrown off by the message that an updated version was already installed on the disk. I'll check out the links, and then if that takes me nowhere try the install as you and Randall suggested.

I'm not an expert, but did you download X11 from the net or install it
from your system DVD?

I had same problem (on PowerPC) until I installed from the DVD

Hello Bill

Take a look at the OpenOffice.org Mac porting site, particularly at the
support page:
http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/support.html

There is a Panther version on the Apple site

For Tiger, you better install it (as Randall said) from your installtion
CD's or DVD
The Package you need to install is called X11User.pkg. Do not install the
Developer's package.
Apple provided an update (v.1.1.2) with errors in the Vera font files, and later made a corrected version available at the Apple site (v. 1.1.3). Maybe
you can update after OOo works with the X11 version from disk
