Harold,
I'm not familiar with Mozilla and Thunderbird, and I'm a new user of OOo.
What do you see as the problems with Thunderbird?

Hi Harold
Many thanks for the prompt reply. I wish I had found OpenOffice
sooner and saved myself a whole heap of frustration.
<snip> I
have persisted using dead slow Microsoft Outlook for email because of
the interactive calendar that reminds one of appointments. I haven't
had time yet for a good rummage around to see if there is something
similar somewhere in OpenOffice. Is there an appointment calendar of
some sort hidden anywhere? Judi

Not really. OpenOffice doesn't have a mail/calendar system. I use Outlook
Express for mail but a Palm PDA for calendar, addresses etc. so I'm not
the right person to ask.
There's a free integrated solution named Evolution which you can get at
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=159440&package_id=194380&release_id=429758.
I've never used it but I hear good things about it. Evolution is
originally a Linux product. The main page which leads to support groups
etc. is at http://www.gnome.org/projects/evolution/
There's also a mail client named Thunderbird which is complemented by
something called Lightning for calendars etc. I tried Thunderbird. Many
people in this support group rave about it. I wouldn't touch it again with
a sterilised barge pole but, in the word of the prophet, YMMV. Thunderbird
is at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/. Lightning is at
http://wiki.mozilla.org/Calendar:Lightning
