Well this problem just stirred up more problems.

I have a small table at the very top of the document. If I try to "Select
All" it highlights the content of the first cell and that's it. I have
to delete the table first.

And if I do delete the table and "Select All" the Format > Default
Formatting option is grey'd out.

But that had no effect. Presumably this was because of my manual
formatting in the beginning.

Fortunately my document isn't that large yet. After clicking within
each paragraph and selecting the 'Default' style, changing the style on
that text now *does* change the text. So I just had to go through each
paragraph and assert the Default style.

But unfortunately the original problem remains - the font metrics are
off. For example, in the word 'networks' the t and the w are actually
touching (kerning is not checked). There are a bunch of words like
that. Also, perhaps more important, the bad metrics are carried through
into the PDF and in print which surprised me a little.

Maybe I should try it in OSX.

Mike
