Can Open Office be installed on a computer with Microsoft Office?
Sure can.  Both can run side by side just fine.

The one thing to watch out for (and to decide) is what application you
want files opening in. If you want, for instance, a .doc file to
continue to open in MS Word, then you need to watch out for that
option when installing OOo (and visa versa).
