Microsoft is using the 6000 page long specification
as a reason that their format should be "the" International Standard
since it can do more. Yes their standard can do more
but how is a 6000 page specification be translated to the real
world of cross platform and cross applications that the
Standards Community wanted?
I downloaded a trial version of Office 2007 and them
downloaded many of their 2007 templates. There were
problems with almost all of them. If MS cannot get their
own format to work correctly with their downloadable
documents and templates, how can others make open-source
to work with those files?
Just my opinions. I have worked with computers
since the days when a PC was just a dream and a small
computer was as big as a Van, plus Bill Gates was still
that nerdy kid who had not even seen his first computer.
I some times wish for the "olden days" of computers
where the programs worked well and where both the
program and the data files could fit on a floppy. Bigger is
not always better. At least Open Office is not as bloated as
most other suites.

The answer is no, it will not open nor save in the new MS Office
2007 format. Even though it is XML based, the document specifying the
format is 6000 pages long. This compares to the specification for the
OpenDocument format being less then 750 pages.
How long will it take to be able to work with this MS Office
format is anyone's guess.
