Why not just hit "Reply All" and go from there. A copy of your response gets posted to the mailing list, and a copy goes directly to the person who asked the question. All bases covered and no additional effort required. The "worst" thing that could happen is that the original poster gets two copies of the reply. That's not a problem; he's the one who asked, after all.
