I am doing an MS Word course, but I'm using OpenOffice.org. (I'm doing this
to prove a point to my wife!) Anyhow, I have a bit of a problem. Two of the
exercises require that I put a certain amount of space (measured in
'points') between paragraphs. I have no problem putting the space between
the paragraphs, but I do have a problem trying to equate 'inches' to
'points'.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

You don't have to convert it. Just type (e.g.) 12pt into the box, and
OpenOffice.org (or most other word processors too) will convert it for

I'm surprised at this suggestion. Sensible though it would be, I
cannot get this to work in my version of Writer (2.0.2 on Windows
XP): any attempt at entering a unit in the paragraph spacing box is
ignored in favour of the unit set in the configuration.
There appear to be two answers:
o As someone has said, a point is one seventy-second of an inch, so
you can calculate the required space in inches (or whatever
measurement units you are using) and use that.
o As someone else has said, go to Tools | Options... |
OpenOffice.org Writer | General. Under Settings, you will find
"Measurement unit". You can change this to "point". Note that this
doesn't change any of your existing values: they merely get converted
to the new unit. And that means that - if you wish - you can change
the measurement unit to "point", set the value you need in that unit,
and then set the unit back to "inch" or whatever you are comfortable
with. Tedious but effective.
I trust this helps.
