Harold thanks for your swift response. I am still experiencing problems. I carry out the procedures as you listed and the following still happens:

Action 1: Downloaded OpenOffice 2.2 to my Desktop.

Action2: Unpacked to a folder on my Desktop, get folder

Action3: Open folder and select Setup.

Action 4: Get window titled:

(The OpenOffice.org Setup) with the following:

This package requires a newer version of windows installer. Do you wish to update the windows installer on your system

Action 5. I select Yes

Action 6: Get window titled Error with:

The specified service already exists. I select OK

Action 7: Get window titled The OpenOffice.org Setup with:

Setup was unable to find file

Action 8: I select OK.

I disconnected from the Internet as you requested. Same result. Reconnected and reactivated firewall and AV.

I then connected to the Microsoft site you referred to and downloaded the program you suggested. I installed this and ran it. A window came stating:

/This utility requires that windows installer be installed and properly registered./ All of my Microsoft products, Windows Office etc are all installed properly and registered so don't know what this is about. I re-checked the site you recommended and at the bottom of the page they do state that if you get the above message try re-registering the file msi.dll. I am confused. No wonder I am trying to get away form Microsoft. If I can get OpenOffice to work next move is Linux.

Any more ideas.

First try the following:
1. Disconnect your computer completely from the internet.
2. Disable your Antivirus (AV) and firewall software.
3. Try the install again.
4. Regardless of the result, restart your AV and firewall and reconnect to the internet. Never leave your system connected to the net if your AV and firewall are not both running properly.

If the above worked, hoorah. Stop reading now.

If not, read the Microsoft article at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301 . Download and run the program it talks about.

If you still can't install OpenOffice then let us know and we'll have another think.
