Indeed. I was very surprised recently at the obvious performance 
increase on extending one of my machines from 256 to 256+512 Mb. 
Between XP and the integrated graphics, I'd not twigged how little was 
left for the useful programs.

There's also a likely issue for users who instal lots of applications. 
I think for the benefit of ease of use, these often automatically start 
lots of normally unneeded programs, which all hog memory. A tidy up - 
keep the rarely needed stuff from autostarting - can work wonders.

(And that might include OOo's quickstart :-)   )
