PCLinuxOS 2007 (http://www.pclinuxos.com/) is deliberately designed to be easy for migrants from Windows and has a good copy of OOo 2.3. (Personally, I use Debian, but it is probably not a good one to start with.) Ubuntu often works well out of teh box, but display can be problematic, which could be off-putting as a starting point.
