You may try as follows:

(1) MS WordViewer 2003+Comp.pack:

- open
- edit/select all
- edit/copy

(2) OOo Writer 2.3.1:

- edit/paste special
- formatted text (RTF)

My results, saved/exported with OOo 2.3.1 [.odt/.doc./.pdf],
