Well, I agree with you 100%, but /is/ a very handy trick.
There will be no conversion if the cells have the proper number format.
A cell with a 'Text' format will not be affected by the replacement,
even if the result looks like a number.
The whole cell data type (numeric vs. string) issue is a huge stumbling
block for Calc users. You try explaining why things like this happen,
and people just run away (and find a different product). I do hope that
someday it will be made right--or at least coherent.
