Excel has one advantage in this area, in that if you parse digits out of a text
string, you can process the result as a string or a number and the conversion is
handled automatically. I've had to modify spreadsheets that were created in and
worked well in excel, but failed in OOo without explicit 'value' functions
applied to mid() results.

The whole cell data type (numeric vs. string) issue is a huge
stumbling block for Calc users. You try explaining why things like
this happen, and people just run away (and find a different product).
I do hope that someday it will be made right--or at least coherent.
