The issue of recognizing unsubscribed posters is a completely separate
one from the one one of how to deal with posts without a decent
subject. Thanks to Harold for explaining in detail why this is so.

At the risk of repeating myself, since it *looks* like I'm the only
subscriber currently active who was here when this first came up: the
*only* reason why this ridiculous habit to manually bother about who
is subscribed and who isn't is still around is because nobody ever
took the time to test and implement the solution which I proposed 2 or
3 times but couldn't do myself for several reasons:

write a procmail autoresponder which recognizes unsubscribed posters
as described above, stores their addresses and, whenever a reply to
their questions appear, sends to the unsubscribed poster who sent the
initial question:

a notification that there is a new answer for him or her in the
archives or

a copy of the reply.

whatever is easier to code.

In order for this to work well, the autoresponder should run on some
Linux computer with a 24/7 Internet connection.

Before you ask: no, I don't have such an account available or time to
code the autoresponder right now. Honestly, in addition to this I was
so pissed off from the reactions I got the other times (all variations
of "since I don't understand your proposal, you must surely be an
hopeless moron, and what would my meaning in life be if I didn't need
to notify unsubscribed posters anymore?") that I really don't feel
like investing time in something that would be completely vanified by
certain attitudes.

Please don't take it personally: none of the current volunteers did
this and I'm well aware of it, but I really don't feel like fighting
this particular windmill to the end. This may change, but don't hold
your breath and please do implement the solution above by yourself if
you can.
