When she uses "Save as", she should select Word from the drop down
list.  Do not simply type in .DOC to replace .ODT, as that won't work. 
Also make sure automatic file name extension is selected.  Also, it is
possible to select File > Send > Email as Microsoft Word, which will
take you directly to the email application, with the document already
attached.  While it is possible to make Word format the default file
type, it's recommended that you work in the default ODF format and only
save a .DOC version when needed.
