I already have Word, but I want to see a friend's document that she created

Your friend using OpenOffice.org can save the documents in Microsoft Word .doc format, so you don't have to have OpenOffice.org yourself. Your friend can also save in PDF format so you can read them with Adobe Reader.

I heard that if I do download your program that I will get a TON of pop-ups,
is that true?

No. You might get a pop-up that asks you if you want to register. You can tell that one to go away and not come back by clicking "Never register", if that is your choice.

Will it change all of my Word docs to .odt documents?

No, it will not automatically convert any document. During the installation process you can choose whether or not you want OpenOffice.org to be the default choice for opening MS format documents, but you will still always be able to open them in the MS programs when you want to.
