Marcia,
You seem to be a Mac user. Can you confirm that ?
Most users of Microsoft Office 2007 (for Windows) or 2008 (for Mac)
are not aware that their system is configured to output pptx or docx
files. The reason is that Microsoft wants everybody to upgrade to
their new systems.
The current accepted way to open .pptx or .docx sent by a Microsoft
Office 2007-2008 user is to ask the sender to re-send the files in the
older format.
On Mac, if you use the latest version of the operating system (OSX
10.5 also known as "Leopard") you can use the application TextEdit to
read the contents of a docx file. Some contents will not be properly
displayed though.
OpenOffice.org is not related to Microsoft Office and does not offer
yet the ability to open Microsoft Office 2007-2008 files. It does
offer compatibility with the previous versions of the Microsoft Office
Suite.

Hello all;
I am teaching online at a university and want to download open
office for mac 2004.
I currently run Office 2003 professional. Is there any problem in
using both programs at the same time? I have issues with opening
pptx or docx from the vista programs.
while I realize there is a patch for that, it will not work on my
mac. I called apple.
Any thing to beware of in downloading Open office for mac? Or is
there one?
Thanks again
Marci
