This is exactly the issue I am dealing with. MAC yes, I have a 10.4.11 version on what I am thinking Tiger or Panther. panther is the DVD version I think it's Panther.
Apple OS X 10.4 is Tiger.
I currently have MS office 2003 in my mac. Well, when students send files in pptx or docx they have to reformat them to office 2003 or 04.
Microsoft changes their file format with each new upgrade of Microsoft Office. Since the new version saves in the new format unless you specifically do a save as to an older format or RTF, the inconvenience of always having to remember to do a save as forces individuals and organizations to have to upgrade all their users to the latest version of Microsoft Office at great expense.
Well, some of them will not open after reformatting to ppt or doc. My tech support was nasty and refused to reformat ppts that won't open to an RTF a universal document, or to let students put those hard to open files into RTF. They will reformat to a ppt but even that; after being in pptx has a bug that will not open again.
If tech support won't re-fromat the files, they should either allow rtf files, a Microsoft developed standard file format, or provide you with a newer version of Microsoft Office for your machine that will open the files.
So here I am I do not even know if OPen office is a viable option for me. The school said maybe it would work? If I have office why would i need Open office and the problems? It was a thought of anything to open these crazy files! I 'm loosing it and ready to quit teaching!
Open Office is a free program as in both senses of the word, freedom and no financial cost. So you can freely download Open Office and use it on your Mac and even pass the program on to other Mac users. Being much more recent than 2003, it most likely will do a better job of opening the ppt or doc files than the 2003 version of Microsoft Office.
Thanks again Marcia
