Dear Jean;
This is exactly the issue I am dealing with. MAC yes, I have a
10.4.11 version on what I am thinking Tiger or Panther. panther is
the DVD version I think it's Panther.
I currently have MS office 2003 in my mac. Well, when students send
files in pptx or docx they have to reformat them to office 2003 or
04. Well, some of them will not open after reformatting to ppt or
doc. My tech support was nasty and refused to reformat ppts that
won't open to an RTF a universal document, or to let students put
those hard to open files into RTF. They will reformat to a ppt but
even that; after being in pptx has a bug that will not open again.
So here I am I do not even know if OPen office is a viable option for
me. The school said maybe it would work?
If I have office why would i need Open office and the problems? It
was a thought of anything to open these crazy files! I 'm loosing it
and ready to quit teaching!
Thanks again
Marcia

Marcia,
You seem to be a Mac user. Can you confirm that ?
Most users of Microsoft Office 2007 (for Windows) or 2008 (for Mac)
are not aware that their system is configured to output pptx or
docx files. The reason is that Microsoft wants everybody to upgrade
to their new systems.
The current accepted way to open .pptx or .docx sent by a Microsoft
Office 2007-2008 user is to ask the sender to re-send the files in
the older format.
On Mac, if you use the latest version of the operating system (OSX
10.5 also known as "Leopard") you can use the application TextEdit
to read the contents of a docx file. Some contents will not be
properly displayed though.
OpenOffice.org is not related to Microsoft Office and does not
offer yet the ability to open Microsoft Office 2007-2008 files. It
does offer compatibility with the previous versions of the
Microsoft Office Suite.

Hello all;
I am teaching online at a university and want to download open
office for mac 2004.
I currently run Office 2003 professional. Is there any problem in
using both programs at the same time? I have issues with opening
pptx or docx from the vista programs.
while I realize there is a patch for that, it will not work on my
mac. I called apple.
Any thing to beware of in downloading Open office for mac? Or is
there one?
Thanks again
Marci
