Hello, Ray.

You've definitely asked the right things in the right forum.

1. This product is totally free. Free of money cost and free of licensing restrictions. If you want to distribute it to friends, there are things you should do, but the requirements are quite reasonable and easy to understand. You can load it onto as many computers as you like.

2. It does work on Vista, but the latest Microsoft file formats are not yet supported. (There is a release in development that does support the newer formats, but those file formats are really undocumented and well-obfuscated; I won't hold my breath.) The newer M$ software _can_ save in the older formats so that compatibility is maintained, but it does require a conscious action to accomplish this. As long as your daughter saves in the older formats, she 9sh dyou) should have no problems viewing and editing the files. (For what it's worth, this is how Microsoft keeps people in their camp - update the software with non-backward-compatible file formats and all your friends have to "upgrade" to be able to read the new file formats. Instant customers!)

3. The download is rather large, but size is not excessive.

4. My life-partner, not very good with computers, does a fine job with it. I think the answer is it's not the same as M$ products, but it is eminently usable by non-geeks.

5. I have used Java 5 for forever and I don't think there is any reason to change. For the most common OOo apps (Writer, Calc, Draw) Java isn't even used.

6. The components are really all integrated - download the whole thing, I would say. The aspect of the user interface is what changes between the different operations. In other words, OOo Calc differs from OOo Writer less than M$ Word differs from M$ Excel, though the user's view differs for both.
